AUGUSTA, Ga. – Syracuse redshirt senior Sterling Hofrichter has been selected to the 2019 Ray Guy Award Watch List, released today by the Augusta Sports Council. The Ray Guy Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate punter and is named after the legendary College and Pro Football Hall of Famer.
Â
A member of the All-ACC Preseason Football Team, Hofrichter was one of the 26 initial award candidates announced Wednesday. Candidates were selected from last year's list of Ray Guy Award semifinalists, the top 10 punters in the 2018 NCAA statistical rankings, last season's all-conference and All-America teams, and the 2019 preseason all-conference teams.
Â
Hofrichter enters his final season third on the Orange career record list with an average of 42.9 yards per punt. In 2018, he helped the Orange lead the ACC in net punting average (39.1 avg.) for the second year in a row. Hofrichter punted 67 times for 2,874 yards (42.9 avg.) with just four touchbacks last season. He topped the ACC with 26 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and kicked 17 balls that traveled at least 50 yards.
Â
The number of eligible candidates for the Ray Guy Award will grow throughout the season. A complete list of candidates will be released on Nov. 5, with the 10 semifinalists announced on Nov. 19. A national body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, media representatives, and previous Ray Guy Award winners will then vote for the three finalists to be announced on Nov. 25.
Â
After the finalists are named, the voting body will cast ballots again to select this year's award recipient. The winner will be announced live on Dec. 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on ESPN.
