FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Syracuse senior linebacker Andrew Armstrong was one of the 93 FBS players named to the preseason watch list for the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy on Thursday, July 25. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Â
A selected studies major in Syracuse's School of Education, Armstrong was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in high school and actively supports the Central New York chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). He's a frequent speaker at JDRF events, sharing his story with other diabetics, and has participated in the organization's annual One Walk to raise money for research.
Â
In addition to his work with JDRF, Armstrong is a member of the leadership group for Syracuse University's chapter of Uplifting Athletes. He served as one of the team captains for last week's "Lift for Life." Armstrong's team raised the most money for the event, bringing in $2,680 of the chapter's $7,287 total to benefit those affected by rare diseases.
Â
On the field, Armstrong has played in 37 games on special teams and at linebacker. He has 74 career tackles, including a personal-best 45 last season. He's also recovered three fumbles and recorded one interception and one pass breakup in his career.
Â
The Wuerffel Trophy is named in honor of former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel. It is the only major college football award that places the majority of its voting emphasis on community service. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 5 and the finalists will be announced on Nov. 18. The formal announcement of this year's winner will be made on Dec. 10 at the National Football Foundation's press conference in New York City. The formal presentation of the 2019 Wuerffel Trophy will take place at the 51st All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 14, 2020 in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
