NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Syracuse sophomore safety Andre Cisco has been named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award. The watch list was released on Friday, July 26 by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the award is presented annually to the top player in college football.
Â
Friday's watch list nod is Cisco's fifth of the preseason. He's also a member of the watch lists for the Bednarik Award (defensive player of the year), Nagurski Trophy (defensive player of the year), Lott IMPACT Trophy (defensive player of the year) and Jim Thorpe Award (best defensive back).
Â
Cisco is one of 10 defensive players who are considered preseason candidates for Walter Camp Player of the Year and he's the only sophomore from that side of the ball. The other three sophomores on the 40-man watch list – Trevor Lawrence (Clemson), Adrian Martinez (Nebraska) and Rondale Moore (Purdue) – play on offense.
Â
A 2018 Walter Camp Second Team All-American, Cisco tied for the national lead with seven interceptions last season. He set the program record for most passes defended by a true freshman (18) and ranked fourth on the team with 60 tackles (46 solo). He has been voted a 2019 preseason All-American by most publications. The No. 43 player on Sports Illustrated's list of the top 100 players in college football, Cisco was voted to the 2019 Preseason All-ACC Team earlier this week.
Â
The list of candidates for Walter Camp Player of the Year will be narrowed to 10 semifinalists in November. The recipient of this year's award will be announced live on ESPN on Thursday, Dec. 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The winner will receive his trophy at the Walter Camp Football Foundation's 53rd annual national awards banquet on Jan. 18, 2020 in New Haven, Connecticut.
