Orange Come Up Short at Henley Royal Regatta

Syracuse's coxless four came up short against A.S.R. Nereus & D.S.R. Laga from the Netherlands in the Visitor's Challenge Cup on Thursday afternoon at the Henley Royal Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England. The Dutch edged the Orange by 1 2/3 length.
Â
"I thought our guys did an outstanding job to race hard the whole way down the track and keep the Dutch crew honest," assistant coach Jason Elefant said. "Those guys from Nereus and Laga have been rowing together for quite some time and are legitimately fast. Several of their rowers have represented the Netherlands at the senior international level and they have won alot of races domestically. We knew they were going to be a fast crew, and our job was to make sure that they had to earn the win with a full race."
Â
The loss ends Syracuse's run at Henley, where the Orange have raced back-to-back years for the first time in over a decade.
Â
"While it's always disappointing to lose a race at Henley, I think the way we raced speaks volumes about our program and this particular group of athletes in particular," Elefant said. "We are 'grinders' at Syracuse and our goal is to race hard from the very first stroke to the very last. The Visitors' Cup is a very tough event at Henley, but we showed that we are willing to challenge ourselves and push the standard. Well rowed, Cuse!"
