Highlights Boeheim Press Conference

VEDANO OLONA, ITALY – Syracuse passed its first test of a four-game exhibition exam of Italy, defeating All-Star Varese, 69-59.

Redshirt junior Elijah Hughes led the Orange with 18 points. Sophomore Buddy Boeheim and freshman Brycen Goodine each added 11 points. Bourama Sidibe led all players with 10 rebounds and contributed eight points and three blocked shots.

Playing Quarters
The game was contested in a four-quarter format. The Orange trailed early, 10-8, before back-to-back layins from junior center Bourama Sidibe started an 8-0 run. Syracuse led at the end of first 10 minutes, 21-14.

All-Star Varese obtained its final advantage of the game early in the second quarter at 27-26. Two baskets from Hughes sandwiched around rebound put-back from freshman Quincy Guerrier pushed the Orange back in front, 33-27. Syracuse did not trail again.

Syracuse jumped on All-Star Varese out of the intermission and led by 15 points at one stage, 49-34. Freshman guard Brycen Goodine led the charge with two 3-pointers. The hosts fought back with an 8-0 run and by the end of the third quarter, the Syracuse margin had been sliced to six, 53-47.

After All-Star Varese started the fourth period with a basket that made it 53-49, the Orange rebuilt their margin to double digits. A last-minute, baseline 3-pointer by freshman Joseph Girard III, helped secure the victory.

For Starters
Coach Jim Boeheim's first starting lineup of the 2019-20 season featured Jalen Carey and Boeheim in the backcourt, Hughes and Guerrier in the frontcourt, and Sidibe at center. Hughes is the lone regular starter back from last year's squad. Boeheim and Carey started in place of injured first-stringers in a few contests during their freshman year.

For The Defense
Syracuse played primarily 2-3 zone in the first half. The Orange did employ some full-court pressure back to man-to-man. Boeheim's club opened the second half in straight man-to-man and stayed with the defense until the early portion of the fourth period, when Syracuse returned to its zone.

The Orange limited All-Star Varese to 23-of-63 (.365) from the field, including a 5-of-25 (.200) showing on 3-point attempts.

Both teams were plagued by turnovers -- Syracuse had 20 and All-Star Varese finished with 18.

Boarding
In addition to Sidibe's double-digit board performance, Guerrier had eight and freshman Jesse Edwards joined with Hughes in adding seven apiece. Overall, Syracuse out-rebounded All-Star Varese,49-38.

Overseas Threes
Buddy Boeheim was the first Syracuse performer to hit from long distance. He converted two early in the contest. Boeheim and Goodine finished with three apiece, freshman Joseph Girard III and Hughes each connected twice, and Guerrier made one.

The Orange started slow, converting just 4-of-18 3-pointers in the first half. Team accuracy improved in the second half, when Syracuse connected on 7-of-17.

The Gift That Keeps On Giving
The two teams exchanged gifts following the national anthem. The Orange presented the Italian Select Varese team with Syracuse hats. The hosts responded with a bag of local Rummo pasta.
