CHICAGO – Senior standouts Kendall Coleman and Alton Robinson have been named to the 2019 Ted Hendricks Award Preseason Watch List, which honors the top defensive end in college football. Syracuse is one of three schools with two players on the 37-man watch list, along with Auburn and Notre Dame.
Â
Together, the pair combined for an ACC-best 20 sacks in 2018, with each notching 10 quarterback takedowns.
Â
A preseason All-ACC selection by Street & Smith's, Athlon and Phil Steele, Coleman has started 31 out of the 32 games he's played in his Orange career. He tallied 32 tackles and 12 tackles for loss last season to go along with his 10 sacks. Against West Virginia, Coleman set the Camping World Bowl record with three sacks in the Orange's 34-18 win over the Mountaineers.
Â
Robinson was picked to the 2019 Preseason All-ACC Team last month and is a member of the watch lists for the Bednarik and Nagurski Awards, honors that are presented to college football's defensive player of the year. Robinson racked up 39 tackles (31 solo) in 12 games last season, including 17 for a loss, in addition to his 10 sacks. He is rated the No. 12 defensive end in the country by Lindy's and he's tied with Miami's Shaq Quarterman for the most career sacks (15) among active ACC players. Â
Â
The Ted Hendricks Award is named in honor of the former Miami Hurricanes star, who was college football's first three-time, first-team All-American. On-field performance, exceptional winning attitude, leadership abilities, contributions to school and community and academic preparedness are some of the criteria used to determine the award's recipient each year. Clemson's Clelin Ferrell won last year's award.
The winner of the 2019 Ted Hendricks Award will be announced on Dec. 11.
