SYRACUSE — The Syracuse women's soccer team shutout Siena, 3-0, on Thursday night in front of a crowd of 682 to earn its second win of the season. The Orange are now 2-0 under first-year head coach Nicky Adams after blanking Colgate, 1-0, on Sunday. Junior Shannon Aviza slotted the first goal of her career, while junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time in her career. This is the first time in program history that Syracuse has started the season with back-to-back shutouts at home.
The Orange previously recorded season-opening back-to-back clean sheets in 1997 while playing away in the Northeast Cup Invitational (vs. Boston 2-0; vs Maine 3-0). Syracuse's other goals tonight came from seniors Taylor Bennett and Sydney Brackett.
"This team has completely bought in, believes in what we're trying to do, and are giving us everything possible every single day," head coach Nicky Adams said. "They're literally fighting tooth and nail to become the best Syracuse team that we've ever had."
On Proulx' performance, Adams said she was extremely proud of her goalkeeper, noting that she continues to gain confidence every time she steps in between the sticks.
How it Happened
Tonight's attack was a well-rounded group effort that saw the Orange completely dominate possession and work an aggressive attack up the sides of the field. Scoring opened 21 minutes into the game when sophomore Meghan Root flicked a low pass to Aviza following a corner kick. Aviza buried the chance to put her side up 1-0.
The Orange added an insurance goal just two minutes into the second half when Bennett was awarded a penalty kick after being tripped up near the center of the box. Calm, cool and collected, the Dryden, N.Y. native stepped up and slotted her chance past Siena's Taylor Dorado to make the board read 2-0 Syracuse.
The final goal of the game would come in the 61st minute from Brackett on a quick run in from the right side of the goal. Bracket outran her defender and beat the keeper low to secure the Orange's victory. Syracuse outshot the Saints 16-10 tonight, placing nine tries on frame. Proulx recorded five saves through 90 minutes.
Up Next
The Orange ship off for the first road trip of the season this weekend when Syracuse travels to Dartmouth on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. in Hanover, N.H.
