HANOVER, N.H. — The Syracuse women's soccer team (2-1) lost, 2-0, to Dartmouth (2-0) today in the first road contest of the season. The Orange continue with a four-city road swing that will see them matchup against Auburn (Sept. 5), Kent State (Sept. 8), and St. John's (Sept. 12). Syracuse then returns back home on Sept. 15 to host Fordham at 1 p.m. in the final non-conference showdown of the year. Parking and admission will be free.
Â
Syracuse was outshot 9-5 today and managed to put just two shots on goal to the Big Green's six. Despite the end result, junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx looked impressive in between the sticks today as she made four saves, with multiple coming in difficult situations requiring Proulx to dive.
Â
"Obviously I'm disappointed in the result today," head coach Nicky Adams said. "A lot of credit to Dartmouth, they kept us on our heels. I thought at times when we broke lines we had the ability to be dangerous but poor decision making kept us from the final piece. We will regroup in our short break before we hit the road on Wednesday."
Â
How it happened
The game started off as a defensive battle as neither team quite able to work their way deep into their respective offensive thirds. Syracuse opened up a scoring chance just six minutes in when redshirt-sophomore Laurel Ness found space near the top of the box, but the Big Green's goalkeeper Mariel Gordon was able to make the save. Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead three minutes later when Allie Winstanley took a rip from the top right corner of the 18-yard box that sailed just over Proulx' head.
Â
The Big Green then started to control possession better as they worked to keep the Orange out wide while continuously making dangerous run-ins up the middle. Their chances were limited though as Syracuse dealt away chance after chance before the halftime whistle blew.
Â
The Orange opened the second half with a scoring chance from senior Sydney Brackett who ran up the left side of the field and fired a shot from the left corner of the box, but Dartmouth's Gordon was able to get in front of it.
Â
After a dangerous-looking free kick in the 57th minute that forced Proulx to work, the game picked up a bit as both sides' offenses started forcing their way into their attacking zones. Brackett kicked it off with a deep run-in up to Gordon's right side. Eyeing down the near post, Brackkett took a rip but Gordon made a sprawling save to end the scoring opportunity.
Â
Dartmouth immediately went on the counter attack, with Winstanley finding her way just eight feet in front of Proulx. Proulx read the shot well and made a diving save to keep her side in the mix.
Â
The final goal of the afternoon came in the 74th minute. Tracey Mills played a low rebound in at Proulx who made the save but Dartmouth's Hayley Soriano crashed the net, settled the loose ball, and played it into the wide-open net to give her side the 2-0 brace.
