Syracuse University student-athletes Kingsley Jonathan (football) and Claire Cooke (field hockey) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Sept. 9.
Jonathan, a junior and native of Baltimore, Maryland, who was born in Lagos, Nigeria, is majoring in information management and technology in the School of Information Studies. The defensive end is a two-time ACC Honor Roll selection, and was named to the SU Athletic Director's Honor Roll in all four of his semesters completed on campus. Jonathan is also one of the ACC's three representatives who hold voting power on proposed NCAA rule changes under the Division I autonomy process, and will attend the 2020 NCAA Convention in Anaheim, California as a member of the voting delegation. He is a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
In his sophomore season, Jonathan had five sacks. In the 2019 season opener at Liberty, he forced and recovered a fumble for the Orange.
Cooke, a junior from Fairfax, Virginia, is majoring in human development and family sciences in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. In 2018, she was named to the All-ACC Academic Field Hockey Team, and she was one of seven members of the Orange to be named to the Zag Sports Tours/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division I National Academic Team. She was also tabbed a Scholar of Distinction by the NFHCA, an honor that only 140 student-athletes from across the country earned in 2018. The midfielder has played in 19 games in her Syracuse career and has scored two goals. She is also a member of the SAAC.
Johnson and the Syracuse football team return to the Dome for their home-opener this weekend as they welcome defending national champion and top-ranked Clemson. This will also be the annual Orange Central/Homecoming game. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the game will be nationally televised on ABC.
Cooke and the field hockey team play one of their six scheduled home games as they host Saint Joseph's Friday, Sep. 13 at 6 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Admission to the game is free and it will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
