LAWRENCE, KS – The Syracuse volleyball team (0-4) lost its second of three matches against Arizona Saturday night. The Orange lost in straight sets, 25-20, 25-23 and 25-22 and conclude the Kansas Invitational against the host Jayhawks tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. EST / 1 p.m. CST.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Similar to Friday night's game, Syracuse jumped on Arizona early, building an early 8-3 lead in the first set thanks to a pair of service aces and a pair of kills from Marina Markova. The Wildcats responded with a 13-4 run to go ahead 16-12. The Orange took advantage of mistakes from Arizona to even the score at 18, but the opposition would take control, and the set, 25-20. Polina Shemanova tallied seven kills for the Orange, and Aliah Bowllan contributed seven digs. Bowllan ended the match with a team-leading 17 digs.
Syracuse was out ahead once again in the second set, 7-4, but the Wildcats leveled the score at 10, recording six kills in the process. The middle portion of the set was back-and-forth, with neither team building a lead larger than two points, until Arizona built a 20-17 advantage. Four kills from Shemanova helped the Orange tie the set at 23, but the Wildcats would hold on, 25-23, to go up 2-0. Shemanova recorded eight kills in the second frame, and led 'Cuse with 18 for the match.
The Orange battled back from a 7-4 deficit to even the score at 14, and then 17, in the third set. As has been the case this weekend, Arizona was able to separate themselves, taking a 21-18 lead and holding on to win the set and sweep the match.
