Box Score Highlights

The Syracuse volleyball team wrapped up its weekend in Champaign, Ill. with a 3-0 loss to the host, Illinois, on Sunday at Huff Hall. The Orange dropped the match by set scores of 25-17, 25-17 and 25-14, falling to 0-2 to start the season.

Kiernan Stamey paced the Orange offense with a team-high 13 kills, adding 9 digs to her performance. Marie Laurio was right behind her with 11 kills and 11 digs for a double-double for the sophomore. Setter Charis Burge dished out 24 assists and Abby Nicholson chipped in four kills and a block from the middle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set one was tightly contested, with the two teams trading points through six ties and battling to a 12-12 tie. From there, Illinois closed the frame to take the opener, 25-17.

After trailing early in set two, Syracuse answered with kills by Nicholson and Laurio to mark the score at 5-2. Stamey notched five kills throughout the set to keep the Orange in the set, but Illinois was able to take control, taking the set 25-17.

Syracuse trailed early in set three before a kill by Nicholson brought them within reach. Laurio and Stamey ripped off six combined kills in set three to keep the set within range, but Syracuse dropped the final set, 25-14.

NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Marie Laurio recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs, marking back-to-back double-digit kill matches for the sophomore.
Kiernan Stamey added 13 kills and nine digs on the match.
Nicholson added four kills and a block in the defeat.

UP NEXT
The Orange head to Ithaca, N.Y. to play three matches in as many days facing Howard, UAlbany and Cornell on Sept. 3, 4 and 5 respectively.
