PITTSBURGH — Syracuse women's soccer opened ACC play tonight with a 1-1 draw against Pitt at Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pa. Syracuse conceded the opening goal in the 37th minute of the first half before tying things up off a 63rd-minute penalty kick from senior Taylor Bennett. The goal was Bennett's second PK of the season and helped the Orange record their second consecutive tie.Â
Â
"To get a point in the ACC is no easy task, especially on the road," first year head coach Nicky Adams said. "We made some adjustments at halftime and the team executed the new plan well, so I'm very proud of the fight our team had throughout game."
Â
How it happened
Pitt secured possession early into the first half and quickly began applying pressure on the Syracuse backline and junior goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx. After putting up seven shots in the opening 36 minutes, the Panthers finally found the back of the net eight minutes before halftime when Rachel Rasins beat her defender down low in the 18-yard box and wrapped a shot around Proulx's outstretched fingers.
Â
'Cuse then scored the equalizer 15 minutes into the second half off a penalty kick from Bennett, the scoring play coming after freshman Kailey Brenner was taken down just in front of the goal mouth. Bennett calmly stepped up to the dot and slotted her chance to even things out at 1-1.Â
Â
Syracuse then stifled Pitt's attack and kept the pressure on to close out regulation and send the match to overtime. The Panthers managed to place four shots on goal between the two overtime periods, but Proulx continued her strong play and knocked away every opportunity, ending the night with seven saves.
