SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse University is pleased to recognize a transformative gift commitment of $25 million from John Lally, Class of '82, and Laura Lally to support the future of Syracuse University Athletics. A graduate of the Whitman School of Management, Lally earned a dual degree in marketing and transportation and distribution management. Lally was an offensive guard for the Orange from 1977 to 1981 and was a three-time letterwinner.
"For Syracuse University Athletics to become even more competitive in both the ACC and on the national stage, the program needs to have first-class facilities, operations and support," John Lally said. "Laura and I are committed to Syracuse University Athletics, and in particular positioning the University to attract, recruit and retain high-performing student-athletes who succeed on and off the field, inside and outside the classroom and in their communities."
The $25 million commitment is designed to inspire, challenge and engage alumni and friends of Syracuse University to aid in creating a best-in-class experience for future generations of student-athletes. More details will be announced later this fall in conjunction with other Sesquicentennial Anniversary events and activities.
"There are certain values that John and I live our lives by and one of those is giving back to others and helping make a difference," Laura Lally said. "We hope this commitment enhances the lives of current and future student-athletes; provides coaches and staff with the tools necessary to develop their players as individuals and as athletes; and generates new energy in the Orange community in Central and Western New York and beyond."
At today's football game against Western Michigan, Syracuse University Chancellor Kent Syverud and Director of Athletics John Wildhack presented a commemorative football to John and Laura Lally in recognition of their transformative gift commitment.
"We are very thankful to John and Laura and their overwhelming support at such a momentous time for our entire athletics program," Wildhack said."Their historic gift commitment will help us transform and elevate the student-athlete experience at Syracuse University. It will also advance our students' abilities to distinguish themselves as star performers in competition and in their studies."
In addition to his love for athletics, Lally established a scholarship in the Whitman School in his mother's honor. The Lally family's commitment is affirmation of the exciting trajectory Syracuse University is on under Chancellor Syverud's leadership.
Originally from Clarence, New York, Lally is the former president and owner of PCB Piezotronics Inc., headquartered in Depew, New York.
In their communities, the Lallys have been involved with such organizations as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western New York, along with supporting many other charitable organizations.
