SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse coaching staff will show its support for the "Coach to Cure MD" program on Saturday, Sept. 28 when the Orange host Holy Cross  at noon in the Dome. Syracuse coaches and other American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) members around the country will wear "Coach to Cure MD" logo patches this weekend to raise awareness of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Â
"Coach to Cure MD" began in 2008 with more than 200 college and high school programs and 2,700 coaches participating. Now in its 12th year, it has expanded to over 500 schools and more than 10,000 football coaches, making it the largest national game-day charity event in football. Since its inception, "Coach to Cure MD" has raised more than $2.1 million for Duchenne research and for projects supported by Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy (PPMD). PPMD is the largest, most comprehensive nonprofit organization in the U.S. focused entirely on Duchenne.
Â
"The AFCA and our members take great pride in our association with Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy," AFCA Executive Director Todd Berry said. "Each year, our coaches look forward to wearing the 'Coach to Cure MD' patch so that they can help bring awareness and much needed funds to help find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy."
Â
Football fans can donate by going online to www.CoachtoCureMD.org or by texting the word CURE to 501501 to make a $25 donation to help fund the fight to end Duchenne.
Â
A progressive muscle disorder that causes loss of muscle function and independence, Duchenne muscular dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood. It affects approximately 1 in 5,000 boys worldwide. To date, there is no cure and life expectancy for those with it is only through the 20s.
