The Syracuse football team lost to No. 7 Georgia Tech, 41-16, at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta on Saturday afternoon.
The Orange used an early takeaway by Chris Peal and a field goal on the opening drive of the first half to jump out to a 3-0 lead, but Georgia Tech (8-0, 5-0 ACC) scored 20 unanswered points, including 17 in the second quarter, to create a 20-3 halftime lead that was too much for 'Cuse (3-5, 1-4 ACC) to overcome.
The Orange opened the second half effectively when quarterback Rickie Collins connected with Darrell Gill Jr. for a 34-yard touchdown strike on just the second play of the third quarter, capping a lightning-quick 75-yard drive in just 41 seconds. The score cut Georgia Tech's lead to 20-10, but that's as close as the Orange would get. Will Nixon punched in Syracuse's other touchdown, coming in the fourth quarter.
Collins completed 17-of-29 passes for 224 yards and the touchdown on the day and did not record an interception. The Orange receiving corps were led by Gill Jr.'s five catches for 79 yards and a score. Eight different players caught passes for Syracuse, including Johntay Cook, who had two catches for 45 yards and Dan Villari, who hauled in one pass for 35 yards. Freshman Darius Johnson also recorded his first reception, returning from injury in the contest.
Syracuse ran for 157Â yards on the ground, led by Yasin Willis' 76 yards on 10 carries. Collins ran for 41 yards on 14 carries as well.Â
Defensively, the Orange had a five-way tie for the team tackles lead. Peal. Braheem Long Jr., Ducee Chestnut, Antoine Deslauriers and Cornell Perry each notched the number. Chestnut also forced a fumble. Kevin Jobity Jr. added another sack, his fourth in the last two games.Â
The Yellow Jackets were led by another strong performance from quarterback Haynes King, who threw for 304 yards and three touchdowns. He was also the team's leading rusher with 91 yards and two rushing scores.Â
Syracuse will have a quick turnaround, hosting North Carolina on Halloween in the JMA Wireless Dome. Tickets are available at Cuse.com/FootballTickets for a night full of festivities. Visit Cuse.com/Halloween for more information.
