PITTSBURGH - Syracuse ice hockey had a rough outing Friday night in Pittsburgh, losing, 5-1, to College Hockey America (CHA) foe Robert Morris in game one of the weekend. Syracuse's lone goal came from sophomore Abby Moloughney part way into the second period. The Orange (6-15-1, 5-3-1 CHA) and Colonials (13-8-2, 7-2-0 CHA) close out the series Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m.
Friday's contest was RMU's Mental Health Awareness game. Both RMU and Syracuse came together before puck drop to #EndTheStigma and bring attention to mental health.
How it happened
Robert Morris opened scoring midway through the first period when Lexi Templeman shoved a loose puck past senior goaltender Ady Cohen during a scramble in the crease. Syracuse sent in 15 shots from there, but the Colonials' defense dealt away the danger and went into the first intermission up 1-0.
RMU went up 2-0 just five minutes into the second when Kyleigh Hanzlik scooped up a loose puck to Cohen's right and sent it top shelf. 'Cuse responded just 40 seconds later with a goal of its own, Moloughney gathering the puck in front of the crease to score glove-side on Raygan Kirk. The Orange weren't celebrating for long, though, as Michaela Boyle lifted one over Cohen to put Robert Morris up 3-1 with nine minutes to play. That goal would be the last of the period, RMU leading 3-1 after 40 minutes.
Boyle added an insurance goal to the board just two minutes into the third, her second of the night setup by a left-side breakaway from Templeman. Templeman slotted it backside for a wide-open Boyle to make things 4-1. Jaycee Gebhard capped off the night with a powerplay-goal in the final two minutes, her score coming on a deflection from the point that bounced past Cohen's mitt.
