
Orange Crush Spiders in Season Opener

RICHMOND, Va. - Syracuse tennis started the 2020 season in the win column, besting Richmond, 6-1, Sunday afternoon in Richmond, Va. to extend the Orange's streak of season-opening wins to six years. No. 64 Guzal Yusupova and Polina Kozyreva both recorded sweeps in their singles matches, and the 48th-ranked duo of Sofya Treshcheva/Kim Hansen combined with Miranda Ramirez/Yusupova to claim the doubles point.

How It Happened
Playing in the No. 1 spot, Treshcheva/Hansen took down Emily Dunbar/Kiana Marshall 6-4. No. 3-slotted Ramirez/Yusupova then used a convincing 6-1 victory over Lyndell Giffenig/Andrea Campodonico to claim the doubles point. Sofya Golubovskaya/Zeynep Erman fell in the No. 2 spot, 6-4, to Dessi Zlateva/Lea Owens.

Singles play was all Syracuse, with Yusupova topping Dunbar 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 1 position. Ramirez then went 7-6 (1), 6-0 at the two spot to win over Zlateva. The hot streak skipped for a moment when Treshcheva lost 6-3, 6-3 to Owens in No. 3, but No. 4 Hansen swept Campodonico 6-4, 7-5 to get Syracuse back on track. The match came to a close when Kozyreva defeated Giffenig 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the No. 4 spot. Erman was up 6-4 in the No. 6 slot before she won due to her opponent retiring.
