No school is more represented in Inside Lacrosse's Preseason All-America list than Syracuse, boasting seven members.
Headlined by first team honoree Nick Mellen, 'Cuse leads Penn State (6), Maryland (6) and Virginia (5) for the most representatives. Mellen – who was a Second Team All-American in 2019 - is followed by sophomore Chase Scanlan, junior Brendan Curry and senior Drake Porter. The trio was named to the publication's second team. Defensive midfielders Peter Dearth and Brett Kennedy represent 'Cuse on IL's third team, while redshirt-sophomore Tucker Dordevic garnered honorable mention accolades.
Perhaps more impressive than the seven honorees is the notable names that 'Cuse still has on its roster that went unrepresented. Two-time All-American Jamie Trimboli and Stephen Rehfuss, the team's assist leader from the past-two seasons, weren't included following the media vote.
Mellen, a redshirt senior, has been a centerpiece of the Orange defense since his freshman season. The Syracuse, N.Y. native enters his final season with the Orange fifth in career caused turnovers. Another strong season would put the two-time All-American Mellen in elite company, joining Jack Salerno, Kevin Sheehan, Jeff Desko, Pat McCabe, Ric Beardsley, Marshall Abrams, John Lade and Brandon Mullins as the only close defenders in program history to earn All-America accolades in three seasons.
Curry, the Orange's only junior captain, started all 14 games, tying linemate Trimboli for the lead amongst midfielders with 33 points (19-14). The Lutherville, Maryland native was a USILA Third Team All-American last season.
Scanlan wrapped up his 2019 season leading all NCAA rookies in goals at Loyola with 41. He projects to be an attackman in the Orange's offense and will don the famed No. 22 this season.
Porter posted the highest save percentage by an Orange goaltender since John Galloway in 2011 last season. The senior enters 2020 having recorded 10-or-more saves in 13 of his 14 career starts.
Dearth is one of the nation's best short-stick defensive midfielders. His 15 caused turnovers was third on the team a year ago and most by any player with a short stick. A USILA Third Team All-American last season, Dearth has proven to be a true two-way threat, scoring six goals last season to complement his defensive accolades.
Kennedy is a two-time ACC selection in his first two seasons playing in the nation's best conference. The New Jersey native caused 13 turnovers and collected 44 ground balls last year.
Dordevic started every game of his freshman season before being sidelined all of 2019 due to injury. As a rookie, the Oregon product showed flashes of potential, including the game-winning goal as part of a four-goal game at Virginia in his first career conference game.
