
Orange Kickoff Busy Weekend on the Track

The Syracuse track and field teams started off a busy weekend of meets with day one in what was the first big meet tests of 2020. The 'Cuse sprinters raced in the Dr. Sander Invitational at The Armory in New York City, while the Orange distance group raced at the John Thomas Invitational in Boston.
At the Dr. Sander Invite, Tyler Garland earned the win in the 60-meter hurdles to lead three Orange into the top-six. Garland finished in 7.97 seconds. Jamil Adams (8.09) took third, while Naseem Smith (8.13) took sixth, as three Orange qualified for the final. Andrew Aguilera finished 13th (8.29). Shaleah Colaire finished in 8.76 seconds for the women in the event.
The Orange also put three runners in the final of the women's 60-meter dash. Led by a pair of freshmen in Aja Davis (7.51 seconds) and Dennisha Page (7.61 seconds) and junior Eunice Boateng (7.64 seconds), 'Cuse took fifth, eighth and ninth. Page and Boateng (7.54 and 7.58, respectively) ran faster times in the preliminaries. Dasia Pressley (7.66) finished 16th.
In the men's 60-meter dash, Chris Tucker took 13th in a time of 6.94 seconds and Jordan Davenport finished 35th in 7.14 seconds.
At the John Thomas Invitational, Annie Heffernan took second in the 5k, crossing the line in 16:34.31. In addition, Maggie Toczko took 11th in her heat, followed by Eva Scott (19th) and Elizabeth Cultra (20th).
Abigail Spiers turned in a personal best in the women's 3000-meter run with a time of 9:50.03. Her time was good for 20th overall in a 135-runner field. Justice Holden-Betts finished second in her heat (10:18.25) and Emily Nugent took third in her heat to round out the Orange in the event.
In the women's mile, Kate Kemnitz led the Orange with a mark of 5:13.35, which was fourth in her section. Kelsey Potts and Kayli Jones each took ninth and 11th in their respective heat.
Bearett Tarris came away with the win in her section of the women's 800-meter race (2:20.87), with Sarah Eddy (2:22.81) closely behind in fifth.
Keiana Mitchell crossed the line in third in her section of the 1000-meter run, finishing in 3:07.56.
Action continues at both meets on Saturday.
