
Ramirez, Helmer Named Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Miranda Ramirez (tennis ) and Andrew Helmer (men's lacrosse) are the Syracuse Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of Jan. 27.

Ramirez, a senior general accounting major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management, comes to Syracuse University from San Antonio, Texas. Ramirez has earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester since fall 2018, appeared on the 2017 and 2018 All-Conference Academic teams, and has thrice been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll. Ramirez was also recognized as a 2017-18 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athlete. She's also participates in Syracuse's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Athletically, Ramirez is one of 33 Orange tennis players to break 100 career wins, has earned spots on the 2017 ACC second team and 2019 ACC third team, was a 2018 doubles All-American, and entered the 2020 spring season ranked 64th in singles play.

Helmer, a redshirt senior from Summit, N.J., is majoring in economics and is also pursuing a finance minor through the College of Arts and Sciences. Helmer was recognized on the 2018-19 ACC Honor Roll and has earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll three times. The men's lacrosse team worked with Team IMPACT to welcome five-year-old Gaven Bort and his family to the men's lacrosse family in October 2019.

Helmer's versatility has been crucial to the Syracuse defense and he's spent time in his career at defense, LSM and SSDM. In three seasons, Syracuse has won 30 games with Helmer's assistance, the defender registering one goal and two assists.

The tennis team is back in action Sunday, Feb. 2 to host Boston University. Matchplay begins at 11 a.m. on ACC Network Extra. It's Youth and Team Day at Drumlins. Pizza, games, and the opportunities to win prizes will be available.Â

Men's lacrosse opens the regular season on Friday, Feb. 7 when Colgate visits the Dome at 4 p.m. 2020 Season tickets are now on sale. You can be part of that action and join the nation's largest lacrosse crowds by purchasing season tickets for just $65 for adults and $35 for youth (12 and under). Student tickets are free with a valid student ID.
