SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Former Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey was assigned to the Dallas Renegades yesterday, the XFL announced. Dungey's addition to the roster came after it was revealed projected starter Landry Jones would be sidelined 4-6 weeks with a knee injury.
Â
"We are very excited to have Eric Dungey join the Renegade family," said former Syracuse fullback and Dallas Renegades Director of Player Personnel Daryl Johnston. "He has always been at the top of our list through this process and we didn't think we would have the opportunity to sign Eric after he joined the Cleveland Browns this fall. It's a blessing to have him join us after the injury to Landry. He brings great athleticism and leadership to our quarterback position."
Â
The Renegades are the third professional stop for Dungey. He originally signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent last May prior to his time on the Browns practice squad.
Â
A native of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Dungey finished his career as Syracuse's all-time leading passer and set or tied 24 school records in 39 games (38 starts) for the Orange from 2015-18. He completed 786-of-1,279 (.615) passes for 9,340 yards with 58 touchdowns in his career and rushed for 1,993 yards and 35 touchdowns on 543 carries (3.7 avg.).
Â
In addition to holding the all-time mark for passing yardage (9,340), Dungey established the Syracuse standards for passing yards per game (239.5), 300-yard passing games (12), total offense (11,333 yards), total offense yards per game (290.6), most plays (1,822) and most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback. He is one of five quarterbacks in ACC history to amass 11,000+ yards of total offense and 90+ touchdowns responsible for (93). The other members of that elite fraternity are Philip Rivers (NC State), Lamar Jackson (Louisville), Tajh Boyd (Clemson) and Deshaun Watson (Clemson).
Â
The 2018 ECAC Offensive Player of the Year and an All-ACC Third Team selection, Dungey completed 226-of-371 (.609) passes for 2,868 yards with 18 touchdowns and rushed for 754 yards and 15 scores as a senior.
Â
Dungey is one of five former Syracuse standouts on current XFL rosters, along with offensive lineman Sean Hickey (St. Louis), defensive tackle Jay Bromley (DC), defensive back Jordan Martin (Seattle) and offensive lineman Andrew Tiller (Tampa Bay).
Â
The XFL's 10-week regular season begins on Saturday, Feb. 8.
