Fighting Irish Get by Orange, 1-0

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame goalkeeper Keagan McLaughlin saved Orange sophomore Abdi Salim's header with 34 seconds remaining to preserve the Fighting Irish's 1-0 win against Syracuse in men's soccer action on Sunday, Oct. 11.
Â
"We left it all on the field today," said Syracuse head coach Ian McIntyre. "We had a bit of a sloppy start we were punished for it. There's a real steep learning curve in the ACC and we have a lot of new guys. We created some chances but not enough. We limited a good team but the thinnest of margins today was the difference."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game's only goal came in the sixth minute off a set piece. Paddy Burns served the ball into the box on a corner kick to Jack Lynn. Lynn took the pass and put his shot in the right corner of the goal to give the Fighting Irish (2-2, 1-1) the lead.
Â
Syracuse (0-2, 0-2) continued to send numbers forward and had its best scoring chance of the first half in the 44th minute. Freshman Deandre Kerr won possession in the Orange's offensive zone and passed to junior Hilli Goldhar, who was making a run at goal. Goldhar got off a shot but McLaughlin made the save to keep the score at 1-0 at intermission.
Â
The Orange again controlled possession much of the second half but couldn't connect in the final third. Syracuse produced a couple of scoring chances in the final three minutes. The first came off a free kick by Goldhar. He served the ball into the box where it went off a Fighting Irish defender to Kerr, who tried to put his shot inside the far post but missed wide. The final opportunity came in the 90th minute when Manel Busquets got the ball to Salim, who joined in from the back, but McLaughlin's fourth save of the day gave Notre Dame the win.
