Syracuse student-athletes are focused to achieve a win for the athletics department, Syracuse University and the greater Syracuse community. They are working to support and engage people from all backgrounds and experiences to foster a culture of mutual respect , enhance the student-athlete experience, and forge a bond with the community they call home during their Orange careers. The Syracuse University Diversity and Inclusion Student-Athlete Board (DISAB) is developing communication between student-athletes, their teammates, the athletics administration, and Syracuse University as a whole to help the greater Syracuse community, enhance the student-athlete experience and foster a culture of mutual respect
"The DISAB creed encompasses student ideas and initiatives to ensure that every person feels welcome, especially our student-athletes who are from all over our country and around the world who have different backgrounds, religions and experiences," said DISAB president A.J. Walker, who is a member of the Syracuse University Spirit Team. "DISAB gives us a platform to help fellow student-athletes, the University and the greater Syracuse community, to raise issues that are important and to participate in ways to positively effect change."
Established in June 2020, DISAB has five primary objectives, including:
A student-led organization, DISAB includes at least two student-athletes from every Syracuse University athletics team who were chosen by their peers and coaches.
Since its inception, the group has developed a creed that represents the student-athletes thoughts and voices supporting diversity and inclusion and achieved their goal of raising more than $13,000 for Blessings in a Backpack to help feed elementary school children in the City of Syracuse through the #44HoursofChange campaign.
The DISAB partnered with the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) to create One Orange Week to amplify the message that although they come from different backgrounds and identities, they are one family. One Orange Week (October 24 to 31, 2020), which coincides with the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Unity Week and the NCAA's Diversity and Inclusion social media campaign, includes a workshop centered on the history of diversity and inclusion in athletics and a symbolic initiative – a One Orange pre-game shirt to be worn by all student-athletes throughout the year.
Future DISAB plans include creation of a diversity training curriculum and additional fundraisers to support the greater Syracuse community. Follow DISAB on Instagram @CuseDISAB.

We STAND in solidarity with our teammates against racism and hatred in all forms. We Pledge to do more than speak up. CHARACTER is a TEAM value, on and off the field."
