'Cuse hosts Duke in the Dome
Coming off a bye week, Syracuse head football coach Dino Babers is looking forward to having his team back on the field this weekend when the Orange host Duke (0-4, 0-4 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 10.
"I am not going to apologize for the week off," Babers joked during his Monday morning press conference. "It's an advantage and it's a disadvantage. We needed a break, we really did. We've got guys banged up… it gives us an opportunity to rest some of these guys during the week. The starters are playing a lot of snaps and the back-ups are not playing a lot of snaps so it gives us an opportunity to grow the underbelly, so to speak, and also rest the starters. I will say this, we got after it a little bit because I really don't want us to have a slow start [against Duke]."
Syracuse is 1-2 this season most recently defeating Georgia Tech, 37-20, on Sept. 26 in a contest that saw impressive Syracuse performances on both sides of the ball. Freshman running back Sean Tucker ran for 112 yards and the 'Cuse defense came away with four interceptions.
Duke enters coming off a 38-31 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday, but the Blue Devil offense found a spark in the second half, tallying 17 fourth-quarter points.
"I expect to be playing a Duke football team that's not going to be turning the ball over a bunch," Babers said while complimenting the David Cutcliffe coached squad. "Their defense is extremely disciplined."
Syracuse and Duke have played four times dating back to the first meeting in 1938. Last season, Babers led the Orange to their first win in program history over the Blue Devils, a 49-6 rout at Wallace Wade Stadium. SU quarterback Tommy DeVito threw for 105 yards, including two touchdowns. Saturday will be the second time the two meet during Babers' Syracuse tenure.
Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. on ACC Regional Sports Networks (YES Network in Syracuse) on Saturday. It will be the second home game of the season for the Orange in which fans will not be in attendance.
Syracuse University Athletics remains committed to doing everything it can to support and protect the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and Syracuse communities. All decisions will be science based and informed by public health and guidance as provided by county, state and public health officials. If fans are permitted to attend games – in some capacity – Syracuse Athletics will announce plans for spectators to secure admission to the events. Fans will be required to sit in their socially-distanced seat locations and wear a face covering.
