SYRACUSE, N.Y. – In the second consecutive overtime game between Syracuse and Penn State, the Nittany Lions emerged with a 4-3 victory in the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Last Sunday the teams played to a 2-2 overtime tie in University Park, Pa. Tonight's game was one of scoring streaks. After Penn State (4-0-1 overall, 4-0-1 College Hockey America) scored the first goal late in the opening period, the Orange (1-4-1, 1-2-1) scored three in a row to take a 3-1 lead into the third period. Penn State then scored three in a row, tallying a pair of goals in the third period to tie the game and then the game-winner at the 3:47 mark in the extra period.
"Both teams really competed hard, which is exactly what we expected," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It was a typical Syracuse-Penn State game where it is a one-goal game. In the past quite a few of these games have gone our way. We have to find a way to get that back from a win perspective. We have to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to win this game tomorrow. It is a huge two points. I'm sure we will have a lot of energy. Both teams will. It will be real good opportunity for our kids to just give it everything they have tomorrow."
Syracuse will host the Nittany Lions on Saturday at 3 pm in Tennity Ice Pavilion. The game will be streamed live on Cuse.com.
In the 38 games in the series, 21 have been decided by one goal and another seven have resulted in ties. Syracuse has won 11 of the one-goal contests, however Penn State has won the past three one-goal games between the teams.
Orange goalie Allison Small recorded 32 saves, increasing her career total to 794, which ranks sixth on the Syracuse career record list. Small has recorded 25 or more saves in 19 of her 30 career games, and 30 or more saves in 12 of those contests.
After Penn State's Maeve Connolly opened the scoring in the first period, Syracuse freshman Tatum White scored the first goal of her collegiate career, on an assist from junior Abby Moloughney and freshman Sarah Thompson, to tie the game with 6:09 left in the second period. Senior Jessica DiGirolamo gave the Orange the lead at the 13:38 mark of the second period, assisted by sophomore Brynn Koocher and freshman Rayla Clemons. With less than two minutes remaining in the middle period, Moloughney scored an unassisted goal to put Syracuse ahead 3-1.
In the third period, Penn State tied the game on goals by Julie Grough and Natalie Heising, to send the game to overtime before PSU's Kiara Zanon scored the game winner.
