ORANGE UPDATE
Freshman Brycen Goodine emerged as the unexpected hero on Saturday night as his lone field goal of the night with two seconds to play secured a 75-73 win for the 'Cuse. Goodine played the final six minutes of the contest after Quincy Guerrier, Bourama Sidibe and Marek Dolezaj each fouled out. With the game tied at 73, Jesse Edwards tipped an Elijah Hughes 3-point miss to Goodine, who deposited the game-winning bucket for the Orange.
Â
Sophomore Buddy Boeheim led Syracuse scorers with 23 points and connected on five triples. He also recorded a career-high four steals. Hughes (20 points) and Guerrier (13 points) joined Boeheim as double-digit scorers, with Guerrier finishing one point shy of tying his career-high. With the win, Syracuse (14-9) moves into a tie with defending-national champion Virginia for fourth place in the ACC standings with a 7-5 record in conference play.
Â
Averaging 19.4 points-per game, Hughes leads the Orange in scoring and ranks second in the conference behind Louisville's Jordan Nwora (19.5 ppg.). With his 23-point performance on Saturday night, Boeheim (16.6 ppg.) ascended to fifth place amongst conference scoring leaders, making Syracuse the lone ACC school with two top-five scorers. The sophomore guard also leads the conference in 3-point field goals per game (3.6), trailing only four players for the national lead, and ranks third in 3-point field goal percentage (.406)
Â
Syracuse features two additional double-digit scorers in Joseph Girard III (11.8 ppg.) and Dolezaj (10.4 ppg.). In addition to leading the conference and placing fourth in the nation in free-throw percentage (.921), Girard III has made his impact felt on the defensive side of the ball, recording 38 steals to tie with NC State's Devon Daniels and Duke's Jordan Goldwire for seventh-most in the ACC. Likewise, Dolezaj has also been a force on defense, leading the Orange in rebounds per game (7.0).
Â
The Orange bring a fundamentally-sound squad into Tuesday's tilt against the Wolfpack, posting the third-best assist/turnover ratio in the conference (1.31). Syracuse has also limited its foes to the third-lowest field goal percentage (.399) and the fourth-lowest 3-point field goal percentage (.304) in the ACC.
SCOUTING THE WOLFPACK
NC State comes to the Dome after defeating Miami, 83-72, in Coral Gables on Wednesday. The Wolfpack are 15-8, including a 6-6 record against ACC opponents. NC State is sixth in the ACC standings and is 3-3 in contests played outside of PNC Arena in conference play this season.
Â
Included amongst NC State's four players who average 10-or-more points per game is leading scorer C.J. Bryce (13.7 ppg.). In addition to leading the team in scoring average, Bryce also paces the Wolfpack with a .481 field goal percentage, good for fifth in the conference. Fellow double-digit scorer Markell Johnson (13.2 ppg.) has perhaps made an even greater impact as a distributer, having dished out an ACC-best 146 assists this season. D.J. Funderburk (12.5 ppg.) and Devon Daniels (11.5 ppg.) round out the double-digit scorers for NC State.
Â
The Wolfpack have had vastly different levels of success on either side of the ball this season. While NC State has the fifth-best offense in the conference (74.3 ppg.), they also have the fifth-worst defense, surrendering an average of 68.9 points per game to opponents this season. However, the Wolfpack have excelled in limiting mistakes, posting the conference's fourth-best turnover margin (2.78). Led by ACC blocks per game leader Manny Bates (3.0), the Wolfpack also own the conference's fourth-best rejection rate, swatting away an average of 4.6 shots per game.
Â
Head coach Kevin Keatts is in his third season at the helm for NC State. Keatts has led the Wolfpack to a 60-32 record. Emerging victorious in 56 percent of ACC matchups, Keatts owns the best winning percentage for an NC State coach in the first two years of his career since Press Maravich went 19-9 in ACC play from 1964-66.Â
Â
