#5 'Cuse Storms Back to Beat #7 Army
2/23/2020 4:17:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Orange move to 3-0 for the first time in 3 years
The No. 5 Syracuse men's lacrosse team didn't lead until there were less than six minutes left on the clock, but a gritty, come-from-behind performance helped 'Cuse top No. 7 Army (2-2) and move to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2016.
The Orange trailed by as many as four goals in the second quarter, but senior goaltender Drake Porter kept the Orange in it with a career-high 18 saves. He held the Black Knights at bay long enough for the offense to come around and pull off another fourth-quarter comeback. Porter's 18 saves were the most in a game by a Syracuse goalie since John Galloway also saved 18 vs. Virgina in 2010. Jakob Phaup dominated on the X, setting a new career-high by winning 16-of-19 faceoffs for the Orange.
It was Jamie Trimboli resurrected the Syracuse offense in the third quarter. He scored three back to back to back goals to start the second half and eliminated Army's three-goal halftime lead. The senior midfielder set a career-high with five goals and tied his career-high in points (five).
"We knew Army coming in, they always play well here in the Carrier Dome, we knew they would be fired up. Especially after their Tuesday game," said Head Coach John Desko. "They came out and played very hard like we knew they would. I have been telling our guys all week long, when we go against Army, you have to go out, roll up your sleeves, and play for 60 minutes. That's held true once again."
The first quarter was the Drake Porter show. He had seven saves before Army scored the first goal of the game with 6:32 left on the clock. Jamie Trimboli answered for the 'Cuse a few minutes later with an unassisted goal. Porter had 10 saves in the first half alone.
Army ended the first quarter and started the second quarter with a goal to give the Black Knights a 3-1 lead over the Orange with 14:01 remaining in the half. Army's Brendan Nichtern added to the Black Knights lead with a pair of goals bringing the score to 5-1 in favor of Army. Syracuse would not be shutout in the half. Brendan Curry dodged from X and got himself free to score to stop the Army run near the end of the half. The Orange went into the locker room down 5-2. Porter ended the half with 10 saves.
The Orange offense came out rolling in the third quarter. Trimboli scored three-straight to tie Army 5-5 with 10:09 left in the third. Two of the goals were assisted by Curry. Army stopped the Orange's 3-0 run with a goal late in the third to regain the lead.
Syracuse found itself down two with 14:13 left to play. Tucker Dordevic and David Lipka scored back to back goals for the Orange to tie the game up with 8:15 remaining. Jamie Trimboli gave Syracuse its first lead of the game with an unassisted goal at the 5:46 minute mark. Curry extended the Orange lead when he ripped one into the back of the net for his fourth point of the day.
Both teams had 25 shots on goal, but Porter's 18 saves compared to Army's 16 saves was the difference. The Orange picked up eight more ground balls, and won all but three face-offs.
Syracuse faces Hobart on Friday, February 28 in a battle for the Kraus-Simmons Trophy. The Orange look to keep the trophy for the seventh straight season. The game begins at 7 p.m. on ACC Network.
