Kraus-Simmons Trophy Up for Grabs on Friday
Syracuse hosts Hobart on Friday night in their fourth-straight home game to start the 2020 season. Here are five things to know about the matchup.
1. It's the Third-Oldest Rivalry in College Lacrosse History
Behind only Cornell/Hobart (138 meetings) and Maryland/Johns Hopkins (112 meetings), Syracuse vs. Hobart is the third-oldest rivalry in college lacrosse. Meeting for the 106th time on Tuesday, the series dates back to when the Orange hosted Hobart in their first varsity lacrosse game on April 29, 1916.
Hobart won the inaugural matchup 9-1, but 'Cuse holds the overall series lead 77-26-2.
2. There's Hardware on the Line
The Kraus-Simmons Trophy is up for grabs when these two teams meet. Introduced to the rivalry in 1986, the trophy is named after hall of fame coaches Roy Simmons Sr. and Babe Kraus. Simmons Sr. coached from 1931-70, while Kraus led the Statesmen from 1925-1966. The pair combined to win nearly 500 games in their coaching careers.
Syracuse has won 31 of the 34 meetings since the trophy has begun being awarded. It's also the second incarnation of the trophy. Due to space limitations on the prior trophy, a new base addition has been installed and the trophy has been updated following the 2018 season. There are now commemorative inscriptions for Kraus and Simmons on each side, with additional space to list the winners. The cup at the top remains the original.

3. A Win Would Have 'Cuse Off to a Historic Start
Known for playing an ever-challenging schedule, a win on Friday night would be just the 25th 4-0 start to a season in program history. 'Cuse hasn't started 4-0 in a season since 2016 and has only done so 10 times since winning their first NCAA title in the 1983 season.
Hobart is also off to a 3-0 start and the two squads are two of the only 10 unbeaten teams left in NCAA Division I lacrosse.
4. The Defense Will Be Challenged
The Statesmen are averaging a staggering 23 goals a game, four more than anyone in the country and have been blowing teams out. They have the largest scoring margin to date, out-scoring opponents by an average of 13 goals.
'Cuse has surrendered just 11 goals in its last-two games combined and enters the game ranked 11th nationally in scoring defense.
5. It's Your Last Chance to Catch 'Cuse in the Dome this Season
In order to make way for the $118 million dollar renovation to create a new stadium experience at Syracuse, the Orange are vacating the Dome after this weekend. Their final two regular-season home games will take place at Cicero-North Syracuse high school.
