THE GAME
- Syracuse plays Colgate in its season opener for the second year in a row. Friday's game is the first of four straight home games for the Orange.
- The game will be broadcast on ACC Network with 'Cuse alums Jay Alter and 4x All-American Ric Beardsley on the call. Brian Higgins and Kyle Fetterly will broadcast the action on TK99/105, Cuse.com and the TuneIn App, while WAER will also carry the game.
PROMOTIONS CENTRAL
- Fans in attendance will be given 2020 team posters, as well as the first in the set of four collectible schedule cards featuring the four Orange captains.
THE COLGATE SERIES
- This will be the 62nd all-time meeting between the two Upstate New York programs. The Orange lead the series 48-12-1 but the Raiders upset Syracuse in last years season opener in the Dome.Â
- In last season's matchup Nate Solomon (3-0), Brendan Curry (3-1), and David Lipka (1-1) each had multi-point days.
- Last season was the first time Syracuse and Colgate clashed on opening day since 2001. Previously the teams met in the final game of the regular season between the ACC and NCAA Tournaments.Â
AGAINST THE PATRIOT LEAGUE
- Syracuse is 113-79-2 all-time against the ten current members of the Patriot League.
- The Orange play Army and Colgate, who are members of the Patriot League in 2020.Â
- 'Cuse boasts a 48-12-1 mark against Colgate, 26-40 record against Army, 9-19-1 record vs. Navy, 8-0 record vs. Bucknell, 3-2 record against Lehigh and a 19-6 record against Loyola. Syracuse has not played Boston University, Holy Cross, or Lafayette to date.Â
DESKO CLIMBING THE RANKS
- John Desko enters the 2020 season tied with legendary SU head coach Roy Simmons Sr. for second in Syracuse history and 17th in NCAA DI history at 253.Â
- The win over Carolina last season moved him past former Maryland coach Jack Farber (251) for 18th and the Navy victory solidified his tie with Simmons Sr.
- Three of Syracuse's four coaches all-time now rank inside the top-17 in NCAA Division I wins.
ORANGE IN OPENERS
- Syracuse owns an all-time record of 80-20 (.800) in season-opening games, including 19-2 under head coach John Desko.
- The Orange lost to Colgate 12-9 in last years season opener, which was the first season opener loss since the 2013 season against Albany.
- Since the Dome opened in 1980, Syracuse is 25-2 in season openers that take place at home.Â
STATE CHAMPS
- This is the first of six games vs. in-state competition this year, including a stretch of four-straight to kick off the 2020 campaign.
- Historically, Syracuse has dominated New York, owning a combined 411-160-10 record against teams from New York.
TEN BELOW
- Syracuse has won 59-straight games when holding opponents to under 10 goals in a game.
- 39 of those 59 games have come since the start of the 2015 season, including a high of 11 in 2016. Syracuse did so six times in 2019.
- The last time Syracuse failed to win when keeping its foe to single digits was on April 28, 2012, when the Orange fell at Notre Dame, 8-6.
A SECOND CENTURY OF SYRACUSE LACROSSE
- While the Syracuse men's lacrosse team celebrated their centennial season in 2016 - the 100th anniversary of the 1916 squad that first brought lacrosse to Syracuse, the 2020 season will be the 101st season of the sport being played at SU.
- Due to no games being played in 1917 and the program being suspended from 1943-45 due to WWII, this will be season 101.
- Syracuse is one of two programs to win 900+ games in program history, with Johns Hopkins being the other.
- Besides all the wins and tradition of success, the most remarkable item of the more than 100 years of Syracuse lacrosse is that the program has only had four head coaches. Laurie Cox (1916-1930), Roy Simmons Sr. (1931-1970), Roy Simmons Jr. (1971-1998) and John Desko (1999-Pres.) have been the only bench bosses in the storied tradition of the program.
A WIN AGAINST COLGATE WOULD...
- Be the program's 913th victory, second all-time behind Johns Hopkins.
- Improve SU's record to 67-28 since the start of the 2014 season.
- Improve Syracuse to 20-2 in season openers under head coach John Desko and 81-20 overall
- Give John Desko 254 career wins as head coach, passing Roy Simmons Sr. for the second most wins by a head coach in SU history and giving him sole possession of 17th on the NCAA Division I coaching victories list.
- Improve Syracuse's record to 412-160-10 against teams from the state of New York.
- Make the Orange 114-79-2 all-time vs. teams from the Patriot League.
