The season may have been shortened by the global COVID-19 pandemic, but through five games there were exciting moments
The 2020 Syracuse men's lacrosse season was cut short due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, but through five games there were some memorable moments as 'Cuse rolled to a 5-0 start. Recap all-five games below.
GAME 1 - AVENGING LAST YEAR'S LOSS
A historic debut for the new No. 22 and an eight-point effort from Stephen Rehfuss left little doubt of a second-straight upset loss.
Sophomore Chase Scanlan scored the most goals ever by a player in their Syracuse debut with seven and Stephen Rehfuss (1-7) posted the second-most assists in Head Coach John Desko's 22-year career to have the 'Cuse offense humming in their season-debut victory over Colgate.
The No. 6 Orange (1-0), used goals from 11 different players, headlined by Scanlan's seven, Jamie Trimboli's four and Lucas Quinn's first collegiate hat trick, to defeat Colgate (0-2), 21-14. The six offensive starters combined for 24 points in the victory and the 21 goals is the most since the 2018 season.
GAME 2 - ORANGE POUND BINGHAMTON
It was over early and the defense came to play in the second week of the season.
A stifling defensive performance helped the Syracuse men's lacrosse team open the year 2-0 after a dominant victory over Binghamton (0-2), 17-4.
The win sets up a ranked battle of unbeatens when No. 13 Army comes to town next Sunday.
Â
As for Saturday's matchup, Griffin Cook set career-highs in goals (3) and points (5) to pace the offense and Chase Scanlan matched Cook's tally with five points and the first three assists of his SU career. The Syracuse offense was well balanced with 11 different players scoring at least one goal. The defense shined with 12 caused turnovers and Drake Porter recorded 11 saves, allowing just four goals.
The key was at the X though, with Syracuse winning 21-of-25 faceoffs, including an 8-of-10 mark from Jakob Phaup, 7-of-9 performance from Danny Varello and a perfect 6-of-6 from Nate Garlow in relief. The group collected 12 combined ground balls as well in a number of clean wins.
GAME 3 - 'CUSEÂ HANDLES FIRST TRUE TEST
No. 7 Army visited the Dome and jumped out to an early lead, but 'Cuse took its first piece of adversity in stride and rallied to win.
The No. 5 Syracuse men's lacrosse team didn't lead until there were less than six minutes left on the clock, but a gritty, come-from-behind performance helped 'Cuse top No. 7 Army (2-2) and move to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2016.
The Orange trailed by as many as four goals in the second quarter, but senior goaltender Drake Porter kept the Orange in it with a career-high 18 saves. He held the Black Knights at bay long enough for the offense to come around and pull off another fourth-quarter comeback. Porter's 18 saves were the most in a game by a Syracuse goalie since John Galloway also saved 18 vs. Virgina in 2010. Jakob Phaup dominated on the X, setting a new career-high by winning 16-of-19 faceoffs for the Orange.
It was Jamie Trimboli resurrected the Syracuse offense in the third quarter. He scored three back to back to back goals to start the second half and eliminated Army's three-goal halftime lead. The senior midfielder set a career-high with five goals and tied his career-high in points (five).
GAME 4 - KEEPING WHAT'S OURS
Syracuse stopped what was statistically the most potent offense nationally to retain the Kraus-Simmons Trophy.
Â
The trophy is back where it belongs for the seventh-straight season after No. 3 Syracuse (4-0) successfully retained the Kraus-Simmons trophy by defeating Hobart (3-1), 21-13.
Career days from Tucker Dordevic (5-2) and Brendan Curry (5-1) in the first midfield propelled the Orange offense to its second 21-goal output on the year and secures a five-goal game from every member of the top midfield in the last-two outings. The success brought the trophy home for the 32nd time in the 35 years it has been awarded.
The Orange never trailed in the contest, but the Statesmen were within a goal heading into the final 20 minutes or regulation. 'Cuse doubled the Statesmen's goal total in the second half, erupting for 14 goals to Hobart's seven, with Chase Scanlan (4-1), Jamie Trimboli (2-2), Stephen Rehfuss (1-2) and Jacob Buttermore (2-0) all having multi-point days.
GAME 5 - ON THE ROAD TO BEAT A RIVAL
The Syracuse offense erupted early to down Hopkins
Â
A dominant performance from start to finish moved the No. 1 Syracuse men's lacrosse team to 5-0 after a 15-9 victory over Johns Hopkins.
Stephen Rehfuss tied a career high with seven assists, while Chase Scanlan (5-1), Jamie Trimboli (4-1), Tucker Dordevic (3-0), Brendan Curry (2-0) and David Lipka (1-0) also contributed in the scoring. Drake Porter was solid in net again, with 16 saves to stymie the Blue Jays scoring chances.
