Syracuse redshirt junior Elijah Hughes has been named the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division I Player of the Year. Hughes also earned a first-team All-ECAC slot.
Hughes is coming off a season that saw him earn all-district recognition from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and the United States Basketball Writers of America, plus first team All-ACC. He led the ACC in scoring, averaging 19.0 points per game. He also won conference statistical crowns for points (609), field goal attempts (465) and minutes played (1,175:11). Hughes scored in double digits in 30-of-32 contests. He topped 20 points 15 times (including one 33-point effort.
Hughes was on the Julius Erving Small Forward Award watch list during the course of the campaign
He began his college career at East Carolina. Following one season with the Pirates, he transferred to Syracuse. After sitting out one year as a transfer, he has been a mainstay in the lineup for the past two campaigns. Hughes has been with the first string for all 66 games during that time. The Orange earned an NCAA Tournament berth last year and had advanced to the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament this season when the corona virus pandemic caused the college basketball postseason to be canceled.
Hughes announced his intention to enter the NBA Draft process last week. He has not yet signed with an agent. New NCAA rules allow him to sign with an NCAA certified agent and return to school, if he chooses.
