
Hawryschuk, Varello Named Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Danny Varello (men's lacrosse) and Emily Hawryschuk (women's lacrosse) are the Syracuse University Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week of April 6.

Hawryschuk is a senior finance and accounting double major in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management. She's been honored on the Academic All-ACC team and has appeared on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll five times.

Hawryschuk earned a spot on the 2020 Maverik Women's Division I All-America First Team presented by Inside Lacrosse after finishing the shortened season with 46 points (39-7). She ranked second in the nation in goals, fifth in points and eighth in points per game (5.75). The Victor, N.Y. native recorded a career-high eight points (7g, 1a) in the season opener and posted six or more points in six-of-eight games. She also recorded a hat trick in all but one outing. Hawryschuk recorded her 200th career goal in the Orange's win at Maryland. She ranks seventh on Syracuse's career scoring list (242) and sixth on the all-time goals scored ledger (201).

Syracuse (7-1) finished the year ranked fourth in the final Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) rankings released on Thursday, March 19. The Orange were on a six-game winning streak before the season was cut short. Two of those victories came at No. 6 Northwestern and No. 11 Maryland. The Orange ended the season with the top-ranked defense in the nation, allowing 7.00 goals per game, while senior goalkeeper Asa Goldstock had the lowest goals-against average (7.07). Along with Hawryschuk, four other Orange picked up All-America honors. Redshirt junior Kerry Defliese and sophomore Sarah Cooper were voted to the second team, while sophomores Megan Carney and Meaghan Tyrrell earned honorable mention accolades.

Varello is a senior economics major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Varello played in four-of-five games in the shortened season. His 20 ground balls were the second most on the team and he ranked fifth in the ACC with 5.0 ground balls per game. The Kings Park, N.Y. native finished the year 12th nationally in faceoff win percentage (.631), he was also second in the ACC. Varello and teammate Jakob Phaup proved to be the best one-two punch in the nation, statistically, finishing the year fifth nationally at the X as a team.
'Cuse (5-0) finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Inside Lacrosse/Maverik Media Poll. The Orange took over the top-spot on March 7 following a 15-9 victory over John Hopkins. 'Cuse outscored the competition 83-47 this year. Syracuse picked up nine Inside Lacrosse/Maverik Media All-America nods following the year. Jamie Trimboli and Brendan Curry were tabbed to the first team, while Peter Dearth and Drake Porter picked up second-team honors. Brett Kennedy earned third-team honors, and Chase Scanlan, Stephen Rehfuss, Phaup and Tucker Dordevic all earned honorable mention nods.
