SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Amanda Bäckebo (ice hockey) and Jamie Trimboli (men's lacrosse) were each awarded Syracuse University's Student-Athlete award Thursday afternoon for having the highest cumulative grade point averages amongst seniors in the athletic department. Their recognition comes as part of the University's 2020 One University Awards that honor members of the University community for their scholarship, teaching, academic achievement, leadership and service.
Bäckebo, a communication and rhetorical studies major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA), is a senior from Gagnef, Sweden. She is a three-time College Hockey America (CHA) All-Academic Team member and a 2018-19 American Hockey Coaches Association American Scholar. Bäckebo has been on the VPA Dean's List for every semester since fall 2017, and she's earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll every semester since fall 2016.
On the ice, Bäckebo contributed seven points in 115 games and was a member of the 2019 Syracuse squad that brought home the first CHA Tournament title in program history. She notably set up freshman teammate Brynn Koocher to score the game-winning goal against Robert Morris on Jan. 18 that gave head coach Paul Flanagan his 400th career win.
Three-time All-American and 2020 team captain Jamie Trimboli is a senior biology major in the College of Arts and Sciences. Trimboli also starred for the Orange on the field, earning First Team All-America honors from Inside Lacrosse in the shortened 2020 season. Trimboli led all midfielders nationally with 3.4 goals per game and anchored a first midfield unit that was on pace to post one of the highest scoring seasons in Syracuse history, with the trio of Trimboli, Tucker Dordevic and Brendan Curry notching over 10 points per game.
A Victor, N.Y. native, Trimboli has earned spots on both the Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll every single semester he's been at Syracuse. He's a three-time ACC Honor Roll honoree and two-time ACC All-Academic Team selection. He also assisted in launching the City Lax Program—an organization that gives inner-city children an opportunity to play lacrosse.
Trimboli was elected as the team captain ahead of the 2020 season and is a two-time United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) All-American. He was a 2018 All-ACC honoree, has started 44-straight games, and he's one point away from becoming the third Orange midfielder to hit 100 career points in the last 10 years. He'll have an opportunity to get that and much more as he announced he'll be returning for a fifth year in 2021.
