FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. – Syracuse senior defensive end Kingsley Jonathan was one of the record 114 players named to the preseason watch list for the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy on Thursday, July 23. The Wuerffel Trophy is presented annually by the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach to the college football player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.
Â
An information and technology major in Syracuse University's iSchool, Jonathan earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and was picked to the All-ACC Academic Team last season. He is a member of the Syracuse Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Board and he is in the second year of a two-year term as one of the ACC's three representatives with voting privileges under the Division I autonomy process.
Â
Jonathan's community involvement includes participation in the 2019 Syracuse University OttoTHON Dance Marathon, which raised more than $200,000 for the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital. He's volunteered at the annual Boys & Girls Club Field Day at Manley Field House and he is the founder of Hoodie Drive, a program he started in 2019 to collect hooded sweatshirts for less fortunate members of the Central New York community during the winter.
Â
On the field, Jonathan has played in 33 career games with two starts. He has 49 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. He carded 24 tackles, three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks last year.
Â
The Wuerffel Trophy is named in honor of former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel. It is the only major college football award that places the majority of its voting emphasis on community service. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 3 and the finalists will be announced on Nov. 23. The formal announcement of this year's winner will be made on Dec. 8 at the National Football Foundation's festivities in New York City. The formal presentation of the 2020 Wuerffel Trophy will take place at the 52nd All Sports Association Awards Banquet on Feb. 19, 2021 in Fort Walton Beach.
