Orange Return to Practice After Brief Hiatus

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After not practicing Thursday due to a miscommunication on when weekly COVID-19 testing would begin and an off day Friday, the Orange football team returned to the practice field this evening.
Syracuse is gearing up for an 11-game season that is scheduled to kick off on Sept. 12 at North Carolina. The Tar Heels were added to the itinerary in July when the ACC elected to move to a scheduling model that features 10 conference opponents instead of the usual eight. The Orange are 3-2 all-time against the Tar Heels, including a 40-37 double-overtime victory in 2018.
Redshirt senior offensive lineman Airon Servais, who is one of 13 returning starters on the 2020 squad and served as the Orange's first-string center in the aforementioned clash with the Tar Heels, likes the fact Syracuse will get to face teams it doesn't play regularly.Â
"We're playing some guys we weren't supposed to play originally," Servais said. "We'll get some rematches that I'm glad I'll be able to be a part of."
Another starter, defensive back Trill Williams, was a true freshman the last time Syracuse and North Carolina met. Now a junior, Williams is one of the leaders of a Syracuse defense transitioning to coordinator Tony White's 3-3-5 scheme.
Williams logged 38 tackles last year and tied for second in the ACC with three forced fumbles. In the season finale against Wake Forest, Williams ripped the ball away from Kendall Hinton and sprinted 94 yards to the end zone, clinching Syracuse's 39-30 overtime win.
He believes the new system will put him in position to keep making big plays.
Said Williams: "I feel like the new scheme will show how versatile I can be. Hopefully, we'll get to play this season and I can showcase my talent and continue to wow people."Â Â Â
