Orange Extra: Opening Up
9/10/2020 3:38:00 PM | Football
The 131st Syracuse University football season kicks off on Saturday, September 12th at 18-ranked North Carolina (Noon, ACC Network).
Â
The Orange are looking to extend their streak of seven consecutive season-opening victories, including wins in every season-opener during head coach Dino Babers' tenure. Syracuse has an 8-2 record in the first game of the season in the last 10 years and owns an all-time record of 84-42-4 in season-opening contests.
Â
Facing a conference opponent in the season-opener is unique for the Orange. This year marks the first time that 'Cuse has opened with an ACC opponent since joining the league in 2013. The only other time that Syracuse played an in-conference foe to open the season was in 2005 against West Virginia when the Orange were members of The BIG EAST Conference. Syracuse has played the Tar Heels to open a season, however. The Orange beat UNC in triple overtime, 49-47, in Chapel Hill.
The 2020 campaign may feature a retooled schedule and a later start than anticipated, but Syracuse is hoping to continue to start their seasons off on the right foot
"This year has been crazy to say the least," redshirt-junior quarterback Tommy DeVito said during Tuesday night interviews. "Never too high, never too low. Just stay consistent through it all and I'm looking forward to this weekend."
Â
Playing a road game to open the season is familiar ground for the Orange. The 2020 season is the third in a row that Syracuse has kicked off away from Central New York. This is the second year in a row that the Orange will begin the campaign with back-to-back away games. Syracuse plays at Pittsburgh on September 19. Last season the Orange won at Liberty in the season-opener and then traveled to face Maryland.
Â
The September 12th season-opener is the latest start for the Orange since 1985 when they faced Mississippi State on September 14th. The late start in 2020 is due to schedule revisions as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
