Markus Paul, the star 'Cuse football DB and NFL vet, was honored at his high school last Friday, when Osceola named their football stadium after him.
Paul passed away suddenly on November at the age of 54. He was a four-year starter for the Orange and a key member of the unbeaten 1987 team. A two-time finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, presented to the nation's most outstanding defensive back, Paul still owns the Orange career interceptions record with 19.
"Not only was Markus an incredible athlete, he was an incredible man of great character, humility, and service," Osceola Athletics Director Jim Bird told reporters this week. "He meant so much to our school and our community, it is only fitting that Kowboys Stadium will become Markus Paul Stadium."
An All-American in 1988, Paul would go on to spend five years as a player in the National Football League after being drafted by the Chicago Bears in the fourth round of the 1989 draft. Following his playing career, Paul would have a successful career in coaching, serving as a strength and conditioning coach for five Super Bowl champion teams.
Osceola officially named their football stadium "Markus Paul Stadium" on Oct. 15, when the Kowboys hosted Dr. Phillips, in a matchup of Florida powerhouses.
