The Syracuse women's basketball team began the 2021-22 season in the Carrier Dome Wednesday night against Monmouth. The Orange earned an 87-46 win in Vonn Read's first game as Acting Head Coach.Â
Â
"It was great to get back in the dome today in front of our fans," said Acting Head Coach Vonn Read, following his first win at the helm of the program.Â
Â
The Orange are set to host Notre Dame (1-0) Sunday, Nov. 14 at 12 p.m. in the first Atlantic Coast Conference opener. At halftime of Sunday's game, Syracuse Athletics will officially retire Felisha Legette-Jack's jersey to the Carrier Dome rafters as the first female student-athlete at Syracuse to have their jersey retired. Legette-Jack was a standout women's basketball player for the Orange in the late 80s and helped SU to the 1985 BIG EAST Championship.Â
Â
All eleven available players on the Syracuse roster made an appearance and scored in Wednesday night's win — ten of which made their first career appearance in an Orange uniform. Â
Â
'Cuse's defensive effort was on full display, as the Orange forced 33 turnovers throughout the game. Teisha Hyman led the effort with four steals in her first game back since Feb. 27, 2020. She finished the game just shy of a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds, four steals and three assists.Â
Â
Three players scored in double digits with Chrislyn Carr leading the way with 15 points shooting 7-for-10 from the field. Graduate student Jayla Thornton added 12 points and Christianna Carr had 11.Â
Â
Sophomore Ava Irvin and freshmen duo Nyah Wilson and Julianna Walker each scored their first collegiate career points.
Â
The Orange now look to Sunday as they take on Notre Dame in their ACC opener. Tip-off is set for noon on ACC Network with Sam Ravech and Kelly Gramlich on the call.
