11/11/2021 5:48:00 PM | Field Hockey
For the 15th time in program history the Syracuse field hockey team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. On Friday, the 10th-ranked Orange will face No. 4 and national seed Penn State (14-5) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in College Park, Md. Game time is set for noon and fans can watch live, for free, on Big Ten Network Plus (B1G+) through the ESPN app.Â
Syracuse posted a 12-4 regular season record and climbed as high as No. 6 in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll this season. The Orange went 1-1 in the ACC Tournament as the No. 2 seed losing to eventual ACC Tournament Champion North Carolina in the semifinals last Friday. Syracuse is led by graduate student Quirine Comans who has nine goals and eight assists for a team-high 26 points this season. Five other Orange have scored six or more goals this season including All-ACC selections Eefke van den Nieuwenhof (second team), Pleun Lammers (first team), and Charlotte de Vries (second team). The Orange put together a nine-game win streak from Sept. 12 to Oct. 22 and have earned wins over five nationally-ranked teams this season.Â
Penn State has won four of its last four games and fell to B1G Tournament Champions Rutgers, 2-1, in the semifinals last week. The Nittany Lions are led by Sophia Gladieux who has 17 goals and two assists this season. PSU averages 2.58 goals per game and has earned 7.8 penalty corners per game while holding its opponents to 1.47 goals per game.Â
'Cuse is 17-13 all-time in the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament and has made the Final Four four times, most recently in 2015 when the Orange claimed the first national championship by a women's team at Syracuse University. SU made 10 consecutive NCAA Tournaments from 2008-2017 and will make its 12th postseason appearance since head coach Ange Bradley began her tenure at Syracuse.Â
Penn State and Syracuse will play for the first time since the 2014 NCAA Tournament, where Syracuse earned a 3-1 win over the Nittany Lions, to advance to the national semifinals for the third time in program history. Syracuse is 3-1 against Penn State in the NCAA Tournament but PSU holds a 4-24-1 advantage in the all-time series history between the two.Â
The Orange have played three NCAA Tournament games in College Park and have a 1-2 record with one loss and one win being against Penn State. Host Maryland will face Virginia in the second first round game on Friday afternoon. The winners of each game will advance to play at noon on Sunday, Nov. 14.Â
Fans making the trip to College Park for Friday's NCAA Tournament games should park in lot 11B, the lot directly next to the complex. Syracuse's alumnae will be hosting a pregame tailgate and encourage fans to stop by and connect with the women' who once donned a Orange hockey uniform.Â
