ELITE ORANGE: #10 Syracuse, #5 Maryland Play for Trip to the Final Four
11/13/2021 7:15:00 PM | Field Hockey
For the first time since 2016 and 10th time in Syracuse history, the No. 10 Orange will play for a NCAA Final Four berth. Sunday's quarterfinal game against host Maryland is set for 1 p.m. on B1G+. Fans can watch live online.Â
The Orange earned a 4-1 win over 4-seed Penn State (14-6) on Friday to advance to the Elite Eight while the Terrapins defeated Virginia, 2-1, in the second game on Friday. Syracuse had four different players score in the first round win while freshman goalkeeper Brooke Borzymowski made five saves in the cage.
'Cuse is the only Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team left standing in the NCAA Tournament. Louisville, three-time defending national champion North Carolina and UVA all lost in the first round on Friday.Â
Syracuse looks to advance to its fourth NCAA Final Four and first since winning the national championship in 2015. The Orange are 16-10 in the NCAA tournament under head coach Ange Bradley and all four previous trips to the national semifinals have been during Bradley's tenure.Â
Sunday will be the third NCAA Tournament meeting between the two with Maryland holding a 2-0 record against Syracuse in the quarterfinals. Both previous postseason meetings were in College Park. In 2001 Maryland routed Syracuse 6-0 in the Elite Eight and the Terrapins needed overtime in 2011 for a 3-2 victory to advance to the finals.
Alumnae, families and friends are encouraged to gather for a pregame tailgate beginning at 11 a.m. in the 11b parking lot (next to the field). Look for the orange tents and Syracuse flags. Bring your own beverages, snacks and school spirit.
