Double OT Drama In The Dome Results in 'Cuse Win

SYRACUSE, N.Y.- Junior guard Joseph Girard III raced coast-to-coast in under seven seconds, was fouled, and clinched a victory with two free throws in Syracuse's112-110, double-overtime triumph against Indiana in the Big 10/ACC Challenge.Â
The Orange improved to 4-3 on the year while Indiana suffered its first loss and fell to 6-1.
Girard, who had 22 points, was one of five Syracuse players in double digits. Senior guard Buddy Boeheim had 27, graduate forward Jimmy Boeheim scoed 26, junior center Jesse Edwards had 17 and senior forward Cole Swider finished with 14.
Indiana received a remarkable performance from junior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis, who had 31 points and 16 rebounds. Junior forward Miller Kopp added 28 points, redshirt junior guard Parker Stewart had 20, including six 3-pointers, and redshirt junior Race Thompson had 17 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists.

"Indiana is a really good team, they are really well coached," said head coach Jim Boeheim. "The key is, they had 25 turnover and we had 18 steals. We scored 33 points from turnovers. I will take that every time we play."
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
After two overtimes, eight lead changes and nine tie scores throughout the game, it came down to the last second of double overtime when Girard III forced a foul and stepped to the line to nail a pair of free throws.Â

STRONG START FOR THE ORANGE
Syracuse opened the game by scoring 10 of the first 12 points, with five points apiece coming from Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim.Â
When the Hoosiers narrowed the gap to 22-18, the Orange answered with 10 straight points. Three-pointers from JImmy Boeheim and Joseph Girard keyed the surge that had Syracuse ahead, 32-18 with 6:30 left in the opening half. An 11-4 stretch to close out the half had the Orange leading at the break, 49-33.

ITS NOT OVER YET
Although Syracuse opened with the first points of the second half, Indiana responded with a 30-9 run led by Steward's three 3-pointers and eight points from Jackson-Davis. The run resulting in the first Indiana lead of the game, 63-60, with just over 10 minutes left to play.

Yet again the Orange offense ignited to spark a 23-9 stretch that recaptured the lead. Jimmy Boeheim tallied 10 during the resurgence and the Orange owned a 83-72 advantage wih 3:44 left in regulation.
The Hoosiers closed out regulation by outscoring Syracuse, 16-5. The Orange intentionally fouled freshman guard Khristian Lander with two seconds left. Lander made the first and intentionally missed the second, which was grabbed by Jackson-Davis and he was fouled with less than one second on the clock. He converted both, sending the game into overtime.
THE FIRST OVERTIME
Kopp opened the first extra session with a 3-pointer but Syracuse countered on a 3-pointer from Swider. With the Orange up two on a basket from Buddy Boeheim, the Hoosiers got even on a Thompson bucket in the lane with 1:10 left. Syracuse had a final opportunity but Girard's long 3-pointer was off the mark.
THE SECOND OVERTIME
Indiana jumped ahead again in the second overtime on back-to-back baskets from Jackson-Davis. Syracuse sophomore center Frank Anselem, who was in the game because Edwards had fouled out, two free throws consecutive possessions and made all four tries to even things up at 101-101 with 3:15 on the clock.
Six points by Buddy Boeheim, answered by just one free throw from Jackson-Davis, had Syracuse ahead, 107-102, with 1:29 left in the second overtime. Indiana managed to tie the game at 110-110 after Kopp was fouled shooting a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds. Girard took the inbounds, raced the length of the court, and was fouled with 0.8 on the clock, setting up the dramatic final.
BIG TEN/ACC Challenge History
The two teams combined for the highest scoring contest in the history of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge by putting 222 on the board. The previous standard was 191 in a matchup between Iowa and Notre Dame in 2013.
Syracuse and Indiana both bettered the single game team scoring mark for the Big Ten/Challenge, which had been 100, established by Wake Forest against Indiana in 2003.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
The Orange travel to Florida State to open the ACC portion of the schedule on Saturday, Dec. 4.
