Orange Lose to Hoyas in Final Minutes

WASHINGTON D.C.- A down-to-the-wire rivalry game resulted in a 79-75 Georgetown win on Saturday at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.. Syracuse fell to 5-5 overall while Georgetown improved to a 5-4 record. All five Orange starters contributed double-digit points for the fourth time this season.
Buddy Boeheim led the charge with a team-high 17 points followed by Joe Girard III contributing 15 points paired with and seven assists. Jesse Edwards and Cole Swider each came up with 12 points a piece, while Swider also passed his career best with six assists. Jimmy Boeheim finished with 10 points for the Orange.
Hoyas freshman guard Aminu Mohammed produced a double-double with a game high of 23 points, 20 of them coming in the second half, and 13 rebounds. Mohammed also contributed five assists and two blocks.
HOW THE GAME WAS DECIDED
The win was up for grabs until the final minutes of the game after the Orange and the Hoyas traded the lead for the last five minutes of the second half. Jimmy Boeheim and Edwards nailed shots during this stretch that kept Syracuse in the game. A 3-pointer from Kaiden Rice, his fifth of the day, marked the final lead change, making the score 75-73 with 1:11 to go and Georgetown leading. The Orange could not catch the Hoyas for the remainder of the game.
ORANGE DOMINATE FIRST HALF
The Orange opened the scoring with shots in the paint from Jimmy Boeheim and Jesse Edwards to give Syracuse a 4-0 edge. Rice responded to the early Syracuse lead with three 3-pointers to help the Hoyas take a11-7 lead. Georgetown had the edge for the next 4:02 until the Syracuse offense produced a 9-0 run to take a 21-16 lead with 11 minutes to go. Frank Anselem, Girard III, and Buddy Boeheim all contributed three points a piece to the drive. The Orange increased the advantage and led at the intermission, 44-34.
CALM BEFORE THE STORM
Syracuse continued to hold the lead in the opening minutes of the second half, despite Mohammed pressing the defense, scoring 12 points for Georgetown in just nine minutes. The Hoyas managed to take the lead for the first time since early in the first half after Hoyas graduate guard Donald Carey netted a shot from behind the arc. The Orange kept the margin close until a pair of buckets in the paint from the Boeheim brothers started a stretch of eight lead changes with 5:22 to go in the half. The lead bounced between the Hoyas and the Orange until the final 1:22 when Georgetown took control.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
After a week break with no games, the Orange return to the Dome to host a non-conference contest against Lehigh on Saturday, Dec. 18 at 6:00 p.m.
