Star defensive back Garrett Williams is back in for 2022!
The All-ACC corner had previously said he would weigh his options as an NFL Draft eligible player, but announced on Friday that he will be returning to school for the 2022 season. Williams, who will be a fourth year redshirt sophomore next season, led the conference in pass breakups (10) this season, despite missing two games due to injury.
Â
At the conclusion of the regular season, the Honorable Mention All-ACC selection, Williams was third in the conference with 10 passes defended, trailing his counterpart Duce Chestnut (11) and Louisville's Kei'Trel Clark (12). Williams was the team's leading tackler out of the secondary (52.0) this season and also had five tackles for loss.
A freshman All-American in 2020, Williams enters the 2022 season with 25 games played, 116 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss, two interceptions and 20 pass breakups.
His announcement to return solidifies that the entirety of the secondary and linebacking corps off this year's defense will be returning. Including the offense, 'Cuse will have 17-of-22 starters (20-of-25 including specialists) for next season.
Â
The news is especially exciting for the SU defense, which heads into year three of Tony White's 3-3-5 coming off a season in which it posted the program's best total defense number in a decade. The Orange finished second in the ACC allowing 330.3 yards per game, which was good for 21st nationally.
