SETTING THE STAGE
The Orange closed out their non conference competition with a 80-68 victory against Cornell on Wednesday. For the second game in a row, Syracuse possessed the lead throughout the entire game from the opening basket. All five starters contributed to the 17-2 drive in the first 7:45 of the game.
Virginia looks to recover from its ACC loss to Clemson, 67-50. The Cavaliers are 1-1 in ACC play with Syracuse as their third conference opponent.Â
THE SYRACUSE-VIRGINIA SERIES
The Orange and Cavaliers have faced one another every year since 2014, Saturday's contest marking the 17th in the series. Although Syracuse leads 10-6, they have lost its last two games in the 2020-21 season to Virginia.
BUDDY ON FIRE
National Player of the Year candidate Buddy Boeheim continues to lead the Orange offense. He produced the highest amount of points for both the contest against Brown and Cornell this past week contributing more than 20 points in each game. In the victory against Brown, Buddy produced a season high of 28 points. Scoring in double digit points in 10 of the 12 games so far, he is averaging 18.8 ppg.Â
GARDNER LEADS THE CAVALIERS OFFENSE
Virginia senior forward Jayden Gardner leads the team with 177 points, averaging 14.8 per game. He scored a season high 29 points in the win against FDU on Dec. 18. Gardner was selected for the Karl Malone Watch List for the 2021-22 season. He was also awarded the Legends Classic Most Valuable Player in the tournament when the Cavaliers were 2-0 with wins against Georgia and Providence.Â
