ORANGE UPDATE
The 'Cuse kicked off postseason play with a bang by defeating NC State 89-68 in the second round of the ACC Tournament. Buddy Boeheim led all scorers with 27 points while Joseph Girard III (14 points), Alan Griffin (12 points), Quincy Guerrier (12 points), and Robert Braswell (11 points) each joined the junior guard with double-digit point totals. Boeheim and Griffin tied for the team lead in assists with five apiece, while Griffin and Jesse Edwards each contributed a squad-best eight boards.
The victory against the Wolfpack marked the second time that the Orange have defeated an ACC opponent on three different occasions in a single season since joining the conference in 2013-14. In the 2018-19 campaign, Syracuse scored three wins against Pittsburgh, which also featured a triumph in the second round of the ACC Tournament.
Boeheim's strong performance in Syracuse's ACCT opener continues a trend of excellence for the Fayetteville, N.Y. native come tournament time. In four ACC Tournament contests, Boeheim has scored a total of 79 points. The only players in program history to tally more points through their first four conference tournaments contests are Jonny Flynn (84) and Pearl Washington (83).
Â
THE FLYING DUTCHMAN
Sophomore center Jesse Edwards has provided an incredible boost down the stretch for the Orange. After grabbing a career-best eight boards at Georgia Tech, the 6-10 big man has matched the mark in two of his past three contests, including in the victory against NC State. The Amsterdam native helped the Orange reserves post 17 points against NC State, their most since tallying 19 at Duke.Â
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia secured the ACC regular-season title after defeating Louisville 68-58 in its regular season finale. The victory improved the 'Hoos to 17-6 overall and 13-4 in conference play. The win also gave the Cavs their second-straight victory after losing three in-a-row to Florida State, Duke, and NC State.
Sam Hauser leads the Cavalier offense with 15.8 points per game. Jay Huff (13.1) and Trey Murphy III (11.1) also own double-figure scoring averages. In addition, Huff leads the Wahoos on the glass with 6.9 boards per contest. Virginia's opponents score an ACC-low 60.1 points per game, the fifth-lowest mark in the nation. The Cavs also average 9.3 turnovers per game, the lowest in the ACC and the third-lowest rate in the country.
Tony Bennett is in his 12th year at the helm of the Virginia program. He guided the Cavaliers to the 2019 national championship and has been named the National Coach of the Year three times in his career.
THE SERIES
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series against the Orange, 9-6. On January 26, Sam Hauser and Jay Huff scored 21 points apiece to guide Virginia past Syracuse in Charlottesville, 81-58. Quincy Guerrier scored a team-best 15 points for the Orange during the contest.
