SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In a match that was ultimately decided in the third set of No. 5 singles, No. 34 Miami defeated No. 50 Syracuse, 4-3, in women's tennis action on Friday at the Drumlins Tennis Center. The Orange will host #7 Florida State on Sunday at 11 am.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hurricanes took the doubles point with wins in match two and three. Syracuse's (4-4) No. 1 duo of Natalie Novotna and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya defeated Estela Perez-Somarriba and Isabella Pfennig, 6-0. However, Miami rebounded to take the next two matches. Diana Khodan and Maya Tahan beat Polina Kozyreva and Sofya Treshcheva, 6-4, before Florencia Urrutia and Daevenia Achong took down Guzal Yusupova and Miranda Ramirez, 6-4.

On the singles side, No. 121 Kanapatskaya continued to shine with her sixth straight victory as she defeated Pfennig 6-3, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Perez-Somarriba, the second-ranked singles player in the nation, earned Miami's second point as she beat No. 81 Guzal Yusupova 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1. In No. 4 singles, Kozyreva beat No. 87 Achong 6-4, 7-5, to tie the team score at 2-2.

The No. 6 singles match went to a tie breaker in the first set, which was won by Khodan, 8-6, against 'Cuse freshman Ines Fonte. She then won the second set, 6-0, to put the Hurricanes up 3-2 with two matches remaining.

Ramirez won the first set at No. 5 singles, 6-3, but Tahan came back to take the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4, to clinch the victory for Miami.

The remaining match was played out and Novotna came back after losing the first set to defeat Urrutia, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.

SCOUTING FLORIDA STATE
No. 7 Florida State's six-match win streak was snapped as it also lost back-to-back matches to Duke and North Carolina. They are led by coach Jennifer Hyde, who is in her 17th season with the program and 22nd as the head coach. At Florida State she has made 15 NCAA Tournament appearances and has a 252-158 record. In 2019, the Orange defeated the Seminoles, 4-3, in the Drumlins Tennis Center.
