'Cuse Comeback Falls Short at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The Orange trailed by as many as seven on the road at No. 2 Duke (9-0), but led a furious comeback effort to take the lead in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Devils scored the game's final two goals and Syracuse's last-second shot was saved, allowing Duke to pull off a 15-14 victory over Syracuse. The Orange fell to 1-1 in ACC play.
Stephen Rehfuss led the Orange with six points (3-3) and Chase Scanlan (4-1) was right behind. Tucker Dordevic (1-2), Owen Hiltz (1-2), Brendan Curry (2-0) and Owen Seebold (2-0) notched multi-point days for 'Cuse. Drake Porter made 13 stops in cage.
Duke did most of its damage by excess possessions. The Orange went 8-of-32 at the X. Michael Sowers (3-3) led the way offensively for Duke.
The Blue Devils got off to a fast start, notching two goals in the game's first two minutes. Syracuse countered with three unanswered to take a 3-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
Duke then scored 10 of the next 12, including a 7-0 run to take a 12-5 lead late in the second quarter. Curry and Seebold answered with goals to close the quarter and send the Orange to the locker room down five.
Rehfuss and Sowers traded goals to open the third quarter, then the Orange ignited with a 6-0 run of their own. Scanlan scored three times in the run, including a highlight-reel goal to knot the game at 13.
Dordevic scored with 7:10 left in the game to give Syracuse its first lead since 3-2, but Dyson Williams answered on a man-up goal with 5:47 to play. Sowers then put Duke over the top with 3:25 left.
Syracuse's last-second shot nearly went in with under a second left, but Mike Adler managed to pull off the save to preserve the win for Duke.
Syracuse returns to action on April 3 against Notre Dame.
