Orange host the Irish on Saturday
Syracuse hosts Notre Dame on Saturday on ESPNU. Here's five things to know about the matchup:
1. Let's Play Two
Syracuse and Notre Dame will play their first of two games in 30 days as the Orange will head to South Bend on May 1 in their final ACC game of the year.
This season, each ACC team is playing six conference games (three home, three road) in lieu of holding a conference tournament this season. Syracuse doubles up with a home-and-home vs. Notre Dame and Virginia.
2. The Notre Dame Series
Syracuse and Notre Dame is the most recent ACC series, having not played prior to 2001 and having the bulk of their 16 total matchups come between BIG EAST and ACC play over the last dozen years. The Orange are 10-5 against Notre Dame and have won two of the last three matchups.
This game has a number of similarities to the Fighting Irish's last trip to the Dome, a game Syracuse won 10-6. In both that game and this week, Syracuse welcomed Notre Dame to 'Cuse looking to rebound from a 15-14 loss at Duke the week prior.
3. Bouncing Back
Under head coach John Desko, the Orange have been consistent in putting a loss behind them. Syracuse is 49-24 under Desko the week following a loss. In 23 seasons under Desko, the Orange have had just 13 losing streaks (2+ losses in a row).
4. Second Midfield Coming on Strong
Much has been made about Syracuse's top midfield unit, and deservedly so. Brendan Curry, Tucker Dordevic and Jamie Trimboli are all on the Tewaaraton Watch List for a reason.
However, Syracuse's second line is putting up one of its most productive seasons in years. Owen Seebold, Lucas Quinn and Griffin Cook have combined for 17 points through six games. Jacob Buttermore – who has been sidelined with injury recently – has been working his way back into the mix as well.
The trio of Seebold, Quinn and Cook is averaging 2.83 points per game, which is on par with what the 2020 second line of Quinn, Buttermore and David Lipka (3.2) were doing through the first five games. Before that though, you need to go back to 2014 to find a second line midfield that was scoring over 2.5 points per game as a unit. That group of Billy Ward, Nicky Galasso and Derek Maltz averaged 4.1 points per game. However, those numbers are skewed a bit by Maltz spending the first half of the season on the Orange's attack line.
Lipka – a member of the second unit in 2020 and 2018 and a starter for the 2019 campaign – makes his return to the Dome on Saturday as a midfielder with Notre Dame, where he is attending graduate school.
5. Students Are Back
The next two Syracuse games will continue to feature students in the building. A limited number of tickets are available and students received an email on Monday with how to claim those tickets.
