5 Things to Know: Syracuse - Vermont
3/4/2021 9:09:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Syracuse hosts Vermont on Saturday, here are five things to know about the matchup:
1. Welcome Back!
For the first time in 370 days, the venue will feature fans at a sporting event. Syracuse University announced today that a maximum of 900 students will be able to attend Saturday's game, provided they test negative within 24 hours prior and on site Saturday.
The last event in the building that featured fans was on March 1, 2020 when the women's basketball team hosted Boston College. The men's lacrosse team blasted Hobart at home the day prior, then traveled to Johns Hopkins on March 7 before no more games were played in 2020.
2. A New Opponent
While Vermont has been an annual scrimmage foe in recent years, this will be the first matchup between the Catamounts and Orange in game.
Syracuse has been known to maintain consistency in its scheduling, owning two of the three longest-running rivalries in lacrosse and typically playing mostly the same schedule year-to-year. This newcomer to the schedule is the first first-time opponent Syracuse has faced since 2013, when Canisius visited the Dome.
3. Rehfuss in the Ranks
Stephen Rehfuss is one of Syracuse's most consistent performers and is three assists from breaking into the top-10 all-time at Syracuse and he's already among some of the all-time greats.
He has 84 career assists, which ties him with Dylan Donahue for 14th all-time. Against UVA, Rehfuss passed Kenny Nims and Tewaaraton winner Mike Leveille.
The names in front of him are some of the game's elite. The only players in front of him are currently Tim Nelson (187), who is third all-time in NCAA history, John Zulberti (158), Tim O'Hara (158), Mike Powell (157), Ryan Powell (150), Casey Powell (129), Kevin Rice (126), Rob Kavovit (121), Jamie Archer (108), JoJo Marasco (87), Liam Banks (86), Paul Gait (85) and Tom Nelson (85).
4. Awards Abundant
Following stellar performances vs. Virginia, Jakob Phaup and Mitch Wykoff were named to the USILA Team of the Week this week. Phaup also collected ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Brendan Curry was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week for an Orange sweep.
Phaup won 22-of-33 faceoffs and collected eight ground balls. He enters Saturday's contest ranked third nationally in ground balls per game (10.5). Wykoff held All-American attackman Matt Moore without a goal for the first time since the 2018 season, ending the sixth-longest active goal-scoring streak in the nation, in what was Wykoff's first action in a 'Cuse uniform.
Curry set a career-high with seven points and four assists in the win.
5. Catch it on ACCNX
All-12 Orange games will be broadcast nationally this season, continuing a stretch that has seen over 95-percent of games nationally broadcast since the start of the 2016 season.
However, this will be the only game not on a linear television station this season, as the rest of the regular season slate is on either ACC Network or ESPNU. Fans can use the ESPN app to watch the game by signing in with their cable provider information. If your cable provider carries ACC Network, you can watch the game on ACCNX as part of that package.
