The Syracuse field hockey team began the 2021 spring season with a dominating 4-1 win over St. Joseph's on Sunday afternoon. The Orange improve to 6-4 overall and will next face Towson on March 14 at Noon in Towson, Md.Â
"It was nice to be able to get outside and play again," head coach Ange Bradley said. "Today was the end of our first week of playing on a full field. We are grateful to St. Joe's for hosting us the weekend. Our team was able to find a way in a very scrappy game."Â
St. Joe's took a 1-0 lead when Emily Peters scored on corner kick with a minute to go in the first quarter. Katy Benton and Lily Santi earned assists on the goal. Syracuse responded three minutes into the second frame when SJ Quigley scored unassisted. The two teams headed into halftime tied 1-1.Â
It was all Syracuse in the second half of action, outshooting the Hawks 6-1 and holding a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners. Charlotte de Vries scored in the 35th minute to give SU a 2-1 lead. Chaira Gutsche scored with under three minutes to play in regulation for an insurance goal and had her second goal of the game in the final minute when she deflected a shot by Roome Joosten into the back of the cage.Â
Gutche had her first multi-goal game of the 2020-21 season and freshman Emily Streib made three saves in her first career start as the Orange goalkeeper.Â
